Evliya Çelebi…

Evliya Çelebi…

Evliya Çelebi is one of the few prominent travelers and writers of the 17th century.
He traveled the lands of Western Europe, North Africa, Egypt, the Middle East, Asia, the Caucasus and Anatolia for more than fifty years, and collected what he saw in his 10-volume work called “Seyahatname.”
Evliya Çelebi received a very good education. Apart from his school education, he learned the Qur’an, calligraphy, music, Arabic and Persian, which were the valid foreign languages of the time, from private teachers, and learned Greek from his father’s neighbor, jeweler Simyon, and took some Latin lessons.

When he was 25 years old he was taken to the palace by Sultan Murat IV. He won the admiration of the Sultan and the notables of the state with his works.

Evliya Çelebi, who made some of his travels in the company of high-ranking statesmen and was well educated for his time, was very sociable, knows where to talk, has a pleasant conversation, and is also a brave traveler.
He participated in many wars and survived considerable dangers.
From an early age, he had a great desire to travel. He wanted to see new places and meet new people. He made his first trip to İstanbul and its surroundings. Then he went out of İstanbul.

Evliya Çelebi lived a travel life of more than 50 years, which would last from 1630 to 1681. Among the places he visited were almost all the places within the borders of the Ottoman Empire at that time.
The events, followed with a realistic eye, are written in a simple and clear, unique way that the public can understand. Folk etymology is also abundant.

Evliya Çelebi describes the places he has visited and seen in his Travel Book in his own style. It contains very important information about all the countries he has visited and seen. In this respect, the work has an important place in terms of Turkish Cultural History and Travel Literature.

Evliya Çelebi, in his 10-volume Travelogue, the original text of which is 4000 pages, and which is in the Library of the Topkapı Palace Museum today, kept notes throughout his 52-year travel life, and wrote at length where he went, what he did, and whom he met.

In the places he wandered around, he first got information from the administrators of that place, examined the records of the region and benefited from other notables, met with the public, and in addition to all these, he completed his work by writing the information he gained by personally traveling and measuring. The dates of this travelogue and the volume number in the Seyahatname are as follows;

1630 – İstanbul and Its surroundings
1640 – Anatolia, Caucasus, Crete and Azerbaijan
1640 – Syria, Palestine, Armenia and Rumelia

In my opinion, the first of the activities that FIJET TURKEY (ATURJET) will lead should be the Turkish Celebrities in History series.

As the first effort, I am sure that by opening a competition among FIJET World Tourism Journalists and Writers on a date to be determined every year, where the best narrators of this world-class traveler will be rewarded as news, research and columnist for one year, I am sure that the Turkish people will introduce their lifestyles, customs and traditions, It will make a significant contribution to the promotion and tourism of the country.

In such a study, T.C. Ministry of Culture and Tourism, İ.B.B. Presidency, İ.B.B. Tourism Platform, TÜRSAB, TUROB and THY, major bookstores should definitely be considered as sponsors that come to mind first.

In fact, these meetings may start from Istanbul and take place in different cities of our country every year, such as Bursa, İzmir, Konya, Eskişehir, Cappadocia, Isparta, Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa etc. It is possible to contribute much more to the promotion of Turkey by being arranged like this.
